Summary:  Performs general housekeeping duties to clean and assist in keeping all assigned buildings and areas located at the Shaw Nature Reserve (SNR) neat and clean. Job duties also include setting up / taking down tables and chairs for programs and events. This position is regularly scheduled to work Wednesday thru Sunday each week.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Event Set-up Duties - Performs general building cleaning in preparation for events and programs; sets up tables, chairs, and audio visual equipment. Areas include: Dana Brown and Adlyne Freund Centers, Maritz Trail House, Carriage House, Pavilions, and Bascom House.
  • Responds promptly to housekeeping requests.
  • Performs general daily housekeeping duties that include the following areas: restrooms, offices, SNR grounds, walls and furniture and maintains all types of floor surfaces.
  • Performs assigned tasks, including sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, dusting, washing surfaces and windows and other duties as necessary to assist ensuring all assigned SNR areas are clean and presentable.
  • Cleans restrooms at several building locations including the Dana Brown Center (DBC), Adlyne Freund Center (AFC), Maritz Trail House, Visitor Center, Bascom House, Carriage House, Pavilions, and the Edgar Anderson Center (EAC).
  • Monitors the inventory of paper products, trash bags and cleaning supplies at the above building locations and maintains an adequate supply at each location. In addition, proactively communicates with Maintenance Supervisor to ensure that the main inventory hub at the maintenance complex is replenished as needed. 
  • Picks up trash, replaces trash can liners, and services recycling containers. Ensures that all recycle materials are placed in the correct containers.
  • Performs minor repairs such as spot painting where needed and clean and store walk-off mats when necessary; monitors and replaces light bulbs as needed at all assigned sites.
  • Operates all equipment in a safe, responsible manner; maintains general care of tools, and equipment; refers more serious problems to Supervisor.
  • Performs deep cleaning of kitchen facilities, windows and other areas as directed during slow winter and mid-summer months.
  • Assists with snow removal on entrance pads and steps for the Dana Brown Center buildings and Adlyne Freund Center. Maintains inventory of bagged sand for the DBC and AFC facilities.
  • Ensures personal appearance is clean and professional; maintains confidentiality of proprietary information.
  • Adheres to all safety standards and promptly reports safety concerns.
  • Remains alert, courteous and helpful to visitors and employees at all times.
  • May be asked to assist other departments in the division.
  • Behaves & communicates in a manner that promotes and fosters a culture of teamwork, cooperation, and respect within our division and throughout the Garden with all employees, supervisors/managers, volunteers, visitors and others
  • Performs other duties as assigned.                              

Qualifications and/or Experience:

  • Minimum of (1) year relevant work experience.
  • Ability to read any special instructions and to understand label on cleaning products.
  • Strong Customer Service Orientation; presents a professional attitude at all times under scrutiny of general public.
  • Work quality and dependability; demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness; follows instructions; welcomes and applies feedback to improve performance.
  • Demonstrated dependability and adherence to all safety regulations.
  • Demonstrates highest level of professional and ethical conduct.
  • Scheduling flexibility that allows working days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
