Under the direct supervision of the General Operations Supervisor, this position performs all aspects of grounds maintenance including all road, culvert, and trail repairs, lawn and field maintenance and mowing, tree felling and tree removal as well as maintaining fences and exterior structures. Must have proficiency in operating the wide range of commercial equipment associated with these tasks.               

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs skilled operation of large equipment such as backhoe, bobcat, track loader, tractors, commercial lawn mowers, weed eaters, brush cutters and chippers used in grounds maintenance tasks.
  • Responsible for brush hogging meadow and prairie areas.
  • Performs skilled tree felling plus removal and clean up.
  • Assists mechanic in routine maintenance and upkeep of vehicles and equipment (i.e., includes blade sharpening on brush hogs, commercial mowers and chainsaws and oil changes).
  • Builds and repairs structures such as foot bridges, observation decks, boardwalks and overlook structures.
  • Assists staff in road and trail work, which includes culvert work, trail building.
  • Performs fence repairs to deer exclusion fence as well as cattle fencing installation and repairs.
  • Responsible for snow removal.
  • Assists in ecological restoration which includes prescribed burns and removal of invasive species and herbicide application.
  • Assists with special events such as Prairie day and family fishing day and the managed deer hunt.
  • Performs general building maintenance tasks (i.e. restrooms, picnic facilities, etc.)
  • Maintains general care of tools, and technical equipment (i.e., apply lubrication and general cleaning.  Refers more serious problems to Supervisor).
  • Adheres to all health and safety guidelines; Adapts or modifies work methods to reduce hazards. Reports all accidents, injuries and near-miss accidents immediately.
  • Behaves and communicates in a manner that promotes and fosters a culture of teamwork and cooperation, within our division and throughout the Garden, with co-workers, supervisors/managers, volunteers, visitors and employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

  • Minimum of four (4) to five (5) years' experience in general grounds
  • Preferred one (1) year experience operating chainsaws and felling trees.
  • Preferred one (1) year experience in safely operating a wide variety of equipment including back hoe, bobcat, tractors, chipper, chainsaw, weed eaters and hand tools.
  • Ability to safely operate fork truck, lift equipment, sewer cables, cutting torches, jack hammer and bob cats.
  • Ability to work independently with little instruction; coordinate and prioritize multiple tasks, set deadlines, and complete projects in a timely manner.
  • Knowledge of acceptable safe work practices including the use of various chemicals, herbicides; lock out tag out procedures, the proper use of hand tools, and safe operation a various of lifts and other moving equipment including fork truck.
  • Scheduling flexibility is required to work evenings, weekends, or holidays.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • An equivalent combination of skills, education and experience may be considered.

Computer Skills: 

  • Ability to use Internet to search for new products and/or methods and to obtain manufactures' literature and required (MSDS) material safety data sheets.
  • Familiarity navigating through various PC applications including but not restricted to Microsoft Office suite (i.e. Outlook, Word, etc.)
  • Ability to use e-mail to communicate with Garden staff in order to answer questions and service their needs.

Language Skills:

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English (oral and written).
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions and information to effectively execute and achieve results.

Mathematical Skills:

  • H.S. basic math required for inventory, warehousing, and chemical treatment (i.e., addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).                             

Reasoning Ability:

  • Requires ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution.                         

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and clean insurable driving record (prior to employment).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid chauffeur's license within (2) months of hire date is required.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to climb ladders and work at varying heights and to operate a wide variety of personal lifts equipment and fork truck.
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended period of time during all seasons of the year.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including fall restraint.
  • Ability to lift at least 60 lbs and work with various pieces of equipment off ladders and/or lifts and over head.
  • Requires clarity of vision at 20 inches or less with the ability to bring objects into sharp focus.
  • Requires standing, walking, bending, stooping and reaching for extended periods of time-- 95% or more of the workday is standing on feet.
  • Ability to utilize computer keyboard (typing).

Work Environment:

  • Work maybe performed in maintenance shop, finished spaces or in and around general construction conditions.
  • Work is performed at varying heights, around energized and moving equipment, and in all weather conditions for extended periods of time.
  • Work is performed using saws and other moving equipment which may generate dust and noise.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions (i.e., in temperatures over 100F as well as temperatures below 0F, in rain, snow and other inclement weather conditions as needed).
  • Comfortable working in immediate proximity to general public, in a safe and friendly manner.
